The Crooked Jades

Bio in German

The Crooked Jades are on a mission to play cutting-edge old-time mountain music, pushing boundaries and blurring categories with their fiery, soulful performances. Unpredictable and passionate, this San Francisco string band brings their music to both rock clubs and traditional folk venues.

The Crooked Jades are signed to Copper Creek Records with 4 critically-acclaimed CDs (including the soundtrack to the award-winning documentary "Seven Sisters: A Kentucky Portrait") and a brand new album, "The Unfortunate Rake, Volume 2: Yellow Mercury," co-produced by alt-country's Richard Buckner.

Founder and band-leader Jeff Kazor has long had a vision of a band that could revive the dark and haunting sounds of old-time music before the influence of radio (1880s to 1920s). Staying true to the spirit of old-time and respecting its tradition, the Crooked Jades' creative arrangements, high-lonesome bluegrass harmonies, and expanded instrumentation add the element of the unexpected and make the music their own.

Known for their rare and obscure repertoire (drawing on Kazor's vast collection of American roots music), and wide array of vintage instruments, the Crooked Jades play material ranging from soulful old-time ballads and rocking string-band dance music to traditionally-inspired original pieces.

The Crooked Jades, started in 1994 from a kitchen jam, are a quintet of accomplished singers and instrumentalists: Jeff Kazor playing guitar, Lisa Berman playing dobro, Hawaiian slide and clawhammer banjo, Tom Lucas playing fiddle, banjo ukelele, and fretless minstrel banjo in 2 -finger, 3-finger and clawhammer style, Stephanie Prausnitz playing Southern old-time fiddle, and Dave Bamberger playing wild arco bass.

Old-Time Is Not A Crime.
